CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications do I need to become a driver for an international NGO like CHAI in Malawi?
You typically need a valid Malawi driver's license with appropriate classes for the vehicles you'll operate, plus a minimum of 3-5 years professional driving experience. Many employers also require a clean driving record, basic vehicle maintenance knowledge, and a PSMB or MSCE certificate. Defensive driving certification from the Traffic Police or Automobile Association of Malawi is often preferred.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a driver at an international health organization?
Your duties include safely transporting staff, partners, and supplies to project sites, health facilities, and meetings across Malawi. You'll maintain vehicle logs, conduct daily inspections, ensure timely servicing, and assist with basic logistics tasks. Punctuality and flexibility for field travel, sometimes to remote areas with poor road conditions, are essential.
How does the work culture differ at international NGOs compared to local Malawian employers?
International NGOs typically emphasize strict adherence to safety protocols, documentation, and professional boundaries more than many local employers. You'll likely work in English alongside diverse teams and need to maintain high confidentiality standards. Punctuality is strictly enforced, and you may travel frequently with limited notice during health emergencies or campaign periods.
What benefits can I realistically expect as a driver for an international NGO in Malawi?
Benefits vary by employer but commonly include medical insurance, annual leave meeting or exceeding Malawi's labor law minimum of 18 days, and pension contributions through NICO or similar providers. Some organizations offer per diems for overnight travel, overtime pay, and fuel allowances. Always review your contract carefully as benefit packages differ significantly between NGOs.
What career progression opportunities exist for drivers in the logistics field in Malawi?
With experience, you can advance to senior driver, fleet coordinator, or logistics assistant roles managing multiple vehicles and drivers. Some drivers transition into full logistics or operations positions by gaining additional qualifications in supply chain management through institutions like MIM or DMI. Building strong relationships with supervisors and demonstrating reliability are key to unlocking these paths.
How should I apply for driver positions and what do employers in Malawi prioritize?
Apply through official job portals, NGO websites, or reputable recruitment agencies like People and Career Solutions or MyJobo Malawi. Employers prioritize proven safe driving history, references from previous supervisors, and honesty about your experience. Prepare thoroughly for practical driving tests and interviews emphasizing reliability, discretion, and knowledge of Malawi's road networks.
