Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a Board Member or Supervisory Committee Member at a SACCO in Malawi?
Most SACCOs in Malawi look for members with at least an MSCE plus relevant experience or training in finance, accounting, business management, or cooperative studies. Professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA, or diplomas from institutions like the Malawi College of Accountancy are an added advantage. You must also be a registered member of the SACCO in good standing.
What are the typical responsibilities of a Supervisory Committee Member?
The supervisory committee oversees internal controls, reviews financial records, and ensures the SACCO complies with its constitution, by-laws, and regulations from bodies like FMB and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. Members attend regular meetings, conduct audits or inspections, and report findings to the board and general assembly. The role is largely voluntary and requires integrity and commitment of time.
Is this role paid, and what benefits can I expect?
Board and supervisory committee positions in Malawian SACCOs are generally voluntary governance roles rather than salaried jobs. Some SACCOs offer sitting allowances for meetings or reimburse travel expenses. Benefits vary by employer, so confirm directly with the SACCO during recruitment.
How much time commitment is required for this role?
Expect to attend monthly or quarterly committee meetings, annual general meetings, and occasional training sessions organised by cooperative bodies like MUSCCO. Additional time may be needed for audits, member education activities, and reviewing reports. Candidates should be prepared to balance this with their full-time employment or business.
How do I apply for this position, and what do SACCOs look for in candidates?
Applications are usually submitted through your SACCO branch or advertised channels when nominations open ahead of the Annual General Meeting. Employers look for honesty, financial literacy, leadership experience, good standing as a member, and no conflicts of interest such as outstanding loan arrears. A clean record with the SACCO is often essential.
Can serving on a SACCO board help my career progression in Malawi?
Yes, governance experience at a SACCO builds credibility in financial services, cooperative management, and community leadership circles. It can open doors to roles in microfinance institutions, NGOs, and other cooperatives, or lead to positions on larger boards. Many leaders also gain valuable training through MUSCCO and regional cooperative development programmes.
