What qualifications do I need to become a Counsellor HTC at Illovo Sugar Malawi?

You typically need a Diploma or Degree in Counselling, Psychology, or Social Work from a recognized Malawian institution like the University of Malawi or Mzuzu University. Certification in HIV Testing and Counselling (HTC) from the Ministry of Health is usually required. Some employers also prefer prior experience in community health or workplace wellness programmes.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Counsellor HTC?

You will conduct confidential HIV testing and counselling sessions for employees and sometimes their families. You will maintain accurate records, provide referrals to treatment centres, and run awareness campaigns on sexual health and prevention. Regular reporting to management on workplace health trends is also expected.

How does workplace culture at large Malawian companies like Illovo Sugar affect this role?

Large agricultural employers in Malawi often have hierarchical structures with clear chains of command, so respecting seniority and following protocols is essential. The role requires sensitivity due to stigma around HIV, so discretion and cultural awareness are highly valued. You may also engage with trade unions and community leaders as part of outreach efforts.

What benefits are typically offered for healthcare roles in Malawian corporate settings?

Benefits usually include medical aid coverage, annual leave in line with Malawi's Employment Act, and pension contributions through NICO or other local providers. Some large employers offer housing allowances or subsidized accommodation for rural postings. Professional development opportunities such as refresher training are also common.

What career progression opportunities exist for Counsellor HTC roles in Malawi?

With experience, you can advance to Senior Counsellor, Wellness Programme Coordinator, or Occupational Health Officer positions. Further studies in Public Health or Health Systems Management can open doors to regional or national-level roles. Some professionals transition into NGO or Ministry of Health advisory positions.

How should I apply for a Counsellor HTC position and what do Malawian employers look for?

Apply directly through the company's official website or by submitting your CV and certified copies of qualifications to their HR department in Nchalo or Lilongwe. Employers value demonstrated experience with Malawian health systems, fluency in local languages like Chichewa, and evidence of community engagement. A well-written cover letter explaining your commitment to confidentiality and employee wellbeing strengthens your application.
