Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to apply for a Finance Intern position at an NGO like Concern Worldwide in Malawi?

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or Business Administration from a recognized Malawian university such as UNIMA or MUBAS. Part-completion of professional qualifications like ACCA, CIMA, or CA Malawi is often viewed favorably. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software is typically expected.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Finance Intern in Malawi's NGO sector?

Daily tasks usually include processing payments, verifying supporting documents, preparing bank reconciliations, and maintaining filing systems. You may also assist with budget tracking, petty cash management, and preparing reports for donors. Accuracy and attention to detail are critical given strict compliance requirements.

How does workplace culture in Malawian NGOs differ from private sector finance roles?

NGO finance roles emphasize donor compliance, transparency, and detailed documentation over profit maximization. Hierarchies tend to be flatter, with more collaborative decision-making between finance and program teams. Punctuality and professionalism are valued, though flexibility around community field visits is common.

What benefits can I realistically expect as a Finance Intern in Malawi?

Internship benefits vary significantly by employer but may include modest stipends, lunch allowances, or transport reimbursement rather than full salaries. Medical coverage and pension contributions are rare for intern-level positions. Always clarify terms in your offer letter before accepting.

What career progression paths exist after completing a Finance Internship with an international NGO?

Successful interns often advance to Finance Officer or Assistant Accountant roles within 1-2 years. Experience with donor-funded projects opens doors to larger NGOs, UN agencies, or audit firms specializing in development sector clients. Many pursue full professional qualifications while working to accelerate promotion.

What do Malawian employers look for in Finance Intern applications, and how should I apply?

Employers prioritize demonstrated integrity, strong academic records, and practical computer skills over extensive experience. Tailor your CV to highlight relevant coursework, any volunteer accounting work, and software competencies. Submit applications through official channels only, and prepare for competency-based interviews focusing on ethical scenarios and attention to detail.
