Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to apply for a Geography Intern position at a school in Malawi?

Most employers require a Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Geography, Education, or Environmental Science from a recognized institution like the University of Malawi or Mzuzu University. A Teaching Certificate from the Malawi Institute of Education is highly advantageous. Some schools also accept final-year students pursuing education degrees.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Geography Intern?

Interns usually assist qualified teachers with lesson preparation, classroom management, and marking student assignments. They often conduct field trips to local geographical features like Lake Malawi or nearby hills for practical learning. Additional duties include maintaining teaching resources and supporting extracurricular geography clubs.

How is the work culture for interns in Malawian schools?

Schools in Malawi typically expect punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and active participation in morning assemblies and staff meetings. Dress code is usually formal or smart casual, and interns are expected to show dedication beyond contracted hours during exam periods. Building relationships with senior teachers through humility and willingness to learn is essential for success.

What benefits can I expect as a Geography Intern?

Internship benefits vary significantly by institution type; government-aided schools may offer modest stipends while private academies sometimes provide transport allowances or lunch. Paid leave is rarely granted during term time, though medical support depends on individual school policies. Most interns prioritize gaining experience and references over financial compensation.

How can this internship lead to permanent employment or career growth?

Successful interns often transition to temporary teaching posts or are recommended for government teacher training programs. The experience strengthens applications for positions at larger private schools or NGOs working in environmental education. Some interns pursue further specialization in GIS or climate studies at regional universities.

What should I include in my application to stand out to Malawian employers?

Highlight any practical teaching experience, such as volunteer work at community schools or peer tutoring during university. Include references from lecturers or headteachers who can attest to your reliability and classroom presence. Demonstrating knowledge of Malawi's physical geography and current environmental challenges shows genuine interest in the subject.
