Leadership experience in managing research teams and securing grants is highly valued. Familiarity with Malawi's National Commission for Science and Technology regulations is often expected.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Head of Research and Innovation at MUBAS?
You would oversee research strategy development, manage grant applications to local and international funders, and supervise faculty research activities. The role involves coordinating with industry partners for applied research and ensuring compliance with university and national ethical standards. Regular reporting to senior management and mentoring junior researchers are also key duties.
How does the local work culture at Malawian universities affect this leadership role?
The culture emphasizes respect for hierarchy and consensus-building, so decisions often require extensive consultation with deans and department heads. Relationship-building with government ministries and international donors is crucial for securing research funding. Flexibility is needed as bureaucratic processes can be slow, and personal networks significantly influence collaboration opportunities.
What career progression opportunities exist after serving as Head of Research and Innovation?
Successful candidates often advance to Deputy Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice-Chancellor positions, or transition to national roles such as Director at the National Commission for Science and Technology. Some move into regional research leadership with bodies like the African Union or international NGOs. Others leverage their networks to establish private research consultancies serving Malawi's development sector.
What benefits are typically included in senior academic leadership positions at Malawian public universities?
Benefits usually include medical aid through schemes like MASM or Liberty Health, pension contributions through the Public Service Pension Fund, and generous annual leave allowances. Housing or housing allowances are sometimes provided, along with research support funds and conference travel budgets. Specific packages vary by institution and are often negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
What do Malawian universities look for in applications for research leadership roles?
Employers prioritize demonstrated success in attracting external research funding, particularly from international donors like NORAD, USAID, or the EU. Evidence of policy impact through research and strong connections with Malawi's private sector are increasingly important. Applications should highlight supervision of postgraduate students and any experience with intellectual property management or innovation commercialization.
