Some positions accept Certificate-level qualifications with relevant HIV counseling experience. Registration with the Medical Council of Malawi or relevant professional body is typically required.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an HIV Diagnostic Assistant?

You will conduct HIV rapid testing and confirmatory testing using nationally approved algorithms, provide pre- and post-test counseling to clients, and maintain accurate patient records in registers and electronic systems. Daily tasks include specimen collection, quality control checks on test kits, and reporting results to clinicians. You may also participate in community outreach and mobile testing services in rural areas.

How does the work culture and employer expectations differ in Malawian healthcare NGOs compared to government facilities?

NGOs like MACRO often emphasize strict donor compliance, detailed reporting, and meeting performance targets for testing volumes. The work culture tends to be fast-paced with regular supervision and quality assurance audits. Punctuality, teamwork, and adaptability to changing donor priorities are highly valued compared to the more structured hierarchy in government health facilities.

What career progression opportunities exist for HIV Diagnostic Assistants in Malawi?

With experience, you can advance to Senior Diagnostic Assistant, Laboratory Supervisor, or Quality Assurance Officer roles within MACRO or similar organizations. Further advancement may include Program Officer positions in HIV prevention or M&E. Some organizations provide housing or transport allowances, especially for rural postings. Specific benefits vary by employer and funding availability, so always confirm during the interview process.

How do I apply for HIV Diagnostic Assistant positions and what do Malawian employers prioritize in candidates?

Monitor job postings on MACRO's website, Malawi Jobs Online, and newspaper advertisements in The Nation or Daily Times. Submit a detailed CV, certified copies of qualifications, and a cover letter highlighting your counseling experience and knowledge of Malawi's HIV testing guidelines. Employers prioritize candidates with prior HIV testing experience, strong communication skills in Chichewa and English, and demonstrated commitment to patient confidentiality.
