Job Expired
The Opportunity:
Under the supervision of the Chief of Party (COP), the Integrated Vector Control (IVC) Coordinator will provide technical, organizational, operational, and logistics coordination for malaria vector control and technical assistance activities implemented through the Abt Global Central Mechanism in Malawi. In collaboration with government counterparts, the project identifies functions for transition and provides support to advance government memorandum of understanding (MOU) objectives. Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required for an Integrated Vector Control Coordinator role in Malawi?

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in public health, environmental health, or biological sciences, with a master's degree preferred for senior positions. Professional registration with the Medical Council of Malawi or relevant health regulatory bodies is often necessary. Additional certifications in malaria control, entomology, or integrated vector management from recognized institutions like the National Malaria Control Programme or international bodies strengthen your candidacy.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an IVC Coordinator in Malawi?

Daily tasks include supervising indoor residual spraying campaigns, monitoring larval source management activities, and coordinating with district health offices to ensure timely distribution of insecticide-treated nets. You will also analyze entomological surveillance data, train community health workers on vector control methods, and prepare reports for Ministry of Health and donor partners. Field visits to rural districts are frequent, requiring travel to hard-to-reach areas during peak malaria transmission seasons.

How does local work culture in Malawi affect this public health role?

Malawian public health workplaces emphasize hierarchical respect, so deference to senior ministry officials and clear communication through proper channels is essential. Relationship-building with district health management teams and traditional leaders is critical for program success, as community acceptance determines intervention effectiveness. Punctuality for meetings with government partners is valued, though fieldwork flexibility is understood given infrastructure challenges in rural areas.

What career progression opportunities exist for IVC Coordinators in Malawi?

With experience, coordinators typically advance to senior technical advisor roles within malaria programs or move into program management positions overseeing national vector control strategies. Some transition to regional roles with international NGOs or multilateral organizations like WHO or PMI, while others pursue doctoral studies to enter academia or policy advisory positions. Specializing in emerging areas such as insecticide resistance management or new vector control technologies opens additional advancement pathways.

What benefits are commonly offered for this type of position with international organizations in Malawi?

Employers typically provide comprehensive medical insurance covering evacuation if needed, annual leave of 20-25 days, and pension or provident fund contributions. Many include hardship allowances for remote postings, professional development funds for conferences or further study, and relocation support for international hires. Specific benefits vary considerably between local NGOs, government secondments, and international contractors, so reviewing employment contracts carefully is advisable.

What do employers in Malawi look for when hiring IVC Coordinators, and how should I apply?

Employers prioritize demonstrated experience managing field-based health programs, strong data analysis skills using tools like DHIS2 or STATA, and proven ability to work across government and NGO partnerships. Your application should highlight specific achievements in malaria or vector-borne disease control, including quantifiable results from past campaigns. Submit applications through official organization websites or established recruitment platforms, ensuring your CV follows international development format standards and includes verifiable references from previous public health supervisors.
