How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to apply for a software developer internship at Pentecost International Christian Centre?
Most employers in Malawi look for candidates pursuing or holding a diploma or degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field from institutions like UNIMA, MUST, or Malawi College of Accountancy. Relevant certifications such as CompTIA, Cisco, or online course completions in programming languages can strengthen your application. A portfolio of personal or school projects is often valued as much as formal qualifications.
What will my day-to-day responsibilities be as a software development intern?
Typical tasks include assisting with writing and testing code, fixing bugs, supporting website or system maintenance, and documenting software processes. Interns often work under the supervision of senior developers and may help with database management, user support, or gathering requirements from staff. Expect to learn the organisation's existing systems before contributing to new features.
What work culture and expectations should I prepare for in a Malawian workplace?
Malawian workplaces generally value punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and professional communication, so greeting supervisors formally and dressing modestly is important. Christian organisations like Pentecost International Christian Centre may also expect alignment with their values and participation in devotional activities. Being proactive, asking questions respectfully, and showing willingness to learn are highly appreciated traits.
Can an internship lead to permanent employment or career growth?
Yes, internships are a common pathway to junior developer roles in Malawi, especially if you demonstrate strong skills and a good attitude during your placement. Even if the host organisation does not hire you directly, the experience and references gained make you more competitive for IT roles elsewhere. Many developers also progress by building freelance or remote work experience alongside local opportunities.
What benefits can I expect as an intern in Malawi?
Internships in Malawi typically offer a stipend rather than a full salary, and benefits like medical aid, pension contributions, and paid leave vary by employer and are not always included. Some organisations provide transport allowance, lunch, or mentorship as non-monetary benefits. Always ask about the terms of engagement clearly before accepting an offer.
How do I apply, and what do employers in Malawi look for?
Applications usually require a CV, cover letter, and copies of academic certificates, submitted via email or hand-delivered as specified in the advert. Employers look for genuine enthusiasm, basic technical competence, good communication skills, and reliability. Tailor your CV to highlight relevant programming languages, projects, and any volunteer or church-related experience that shows character.
