The Export Development Fund (EDF) is a Development Finance Institution (DFI) mandated to promote the growth and diversification of Malawi’s exports. EDF plays a central role in supporting industrialisation, facilitating trade, and accelerating economic transformation through innovative financing solutions and strategic investments.
EDF contributes directly to national development priorities, including the Malawi 2063 and the National Export Strategy (NES), by financing high impact projects across key productive sectors, promoting value addition, and enhancing export competitiveness.

EDF is seeking a strategic, results-oriented, and high-integrity Legal Services Manager & Company Secretary on a fixed one-year term.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and provide legal advice including legal representation on cases and various contracts between the Fund and outside parties.
  • Conduct legal due diligence on clients and potential partners and consultants.
  • Provide legal protection and risk management advice to management, especially on contract management,
  • Review progress of outstanding litigation and liaise with and manage external lawyers.
  • Undertake and enforce debt collection in line with the Fund’s Credit and Investment Policy.
  • Taking lead in Board Pack preparation, compiling Board Resolutions, and taking minutes of the Board Committees and main Board of Directors’ meetings.
  • Analyse a broad range of complex laws and regulations affecting the operations of the Company including those arising from corporate structures and business models.
  • Support the implementation of the Code of Conduct in the Company and promote an ethical and legally compliant business culture
  • Monitor the Company’s compliance with statutory, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements.
  • Handle or oversee legal cases, coordinate with external counsel, and represent the organization in courts, tribunals, or arbitrations when necessary.
  • Produce periodic legal reports

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) and a relevant Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
  • Licensing: required to be a practicing lawyer and admitted to the bar and in good standing with relevant legal association(s).
  • Experience: minimum of 3 years in a banking/financial services industry and a cumulative working experience of at least 5 years.
  • Strong expertise in legal research, drafting, and analysis.
  • Excellent negotiation and mediation abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal tech tools.
  • High standard of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information.
