Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or education do I need to become a Project Assistant at TEVETA or similar technical organizations in Malawi?

Most employers require a Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Project Management, Business Administration, or a technical field relevant to the sector. Certifications like PRINCE2, PMP, or local TEVETA-accredited project management qualifications strengthen your application. Practical experience with NGOs, government projects, or technical vocational training programs is highly valued.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Project Assistant in Malawi's technical sector?

You will coordinate project activities, prepare reports for donors and government stakeholders, organize training sessions, and manage procurement logistics. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Malawi's public financial management procedures are essential. You may also facilitate community engagement and monitor project implementation in rural areas.

How does the contract-based work culture affect job security and expectations at organizations like TEVETA?

Contract positions typically run for 6–24 months depending on project funding, requiring adaptability and proactive networking for renewal or new opportunities. Employers expect high accountability, punctuality, and willingness to travel to project sites across Malawi. Demonstrating reliability and building strong relationships with supervisors improves your chances of contract extensions.

What career progression paths exist for Project Assistants in Malawi's technical and vocational education sector?

With experience, you can advance to Project Coordinator, Program Manager, or Technical Specialist roles within TEVETA, donor agencies, or international NGOs. Pursuing further qualifications in monitoring and evaluation, technical education policy, or specialized certifications opens doors to senior management. Benefits vary by employer but typically include paid annual leave, medical insurance or access to MASM/CHAM services, and statutory pension contributions under the Pension Act.
