What qualifications and certifications are typically required for a Project Officer – Grade I in CCAP Nkhoma Synod Health Department?

A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or a related field is usually required; preference is often given to candidates with postgraduate diplomas in Project Management or short courses accredited by the Malawi National Qualifications Authority (MNQA). Relevant experience in health or community development projects within Malawi, especially with faith-based or NGO partners, is highly valued.

What does a typical day look like for a Project Officer – Grade I in this role?

Daily tasks include coordinating field activities with health centre staff and community volunteers, documenting progress against project indicators, and preparing weekly reports for supervisors. You’ll frequently travel to rural health facilities in Lilongwe and Dowa districts, conduct community sensitisation sessions, and support data collection using paper-based or mobile tools aligned with Ministry of Health reporting standards.

How does work culture in Malawian health projects differ from international settings, and what should I expect?

Decision-making tends to be hierarchical and consultative, with strong emphasis on respect for senior staff and church leadership structures, especially within CCAP contexts. Punctuality is appreciated, but flexibility around community schedules and local events (e.g., funerals, harvest periods) is expected and understood by supervisors.

What career progression opportunities exist after serving as a Project Officer – Grade I in this department?

With 2–3 years of strong performance and demonstrated leadership, officers may advance to Project Officer – Grade II or transition into roles such as Monitoring & Evaluation Officer or Programme Coordinator within CCAP or partner NGOs like UNICEF or WHO implementing partners. Employees usually receive 21 days of annual leave, sick leave per the Employment Act, and maternity/paternity leave in line with Malawian law. Medical cover is often provided through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) or a church-affiliated scheme, and pension contributions follow the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) requirements for formal sector workers.

How do I apply, and what do hiring managers in Malawi specifically look for in candidates for this role?

Applications are typically submitted via email or hard copy to the CCAP Nkhoma Synod office in Lilongwe, including a CV, certified academic certificates, and two professional references—one preferably from a previous health or church-related project. Hiring managers prioritise candidates with proven community engagement skills in Chichewa, familiarity with Malawi’s Integrated Health Service Delivery Framework, and evidence of ethical conduct aligned with CCAP’s Christian values.
