Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications are typically required for a Quality Assurance Officer role at MACRA?
A bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field is usually required. Professional certifications such as ISTQB Foundation Level or ISO/IEC 17025 internal auditor training are valued, though not always mandatory. Relevant experience in telecom regulatory compliance or network quality monitoring in Malawi or similar SADC jurisdictions strengthens applications.
What does a typical day look like for a Quality Assurance Officer at MACRA?
Daily tasks include reviewing telecom service provider reports, conducting field audits of network performance (e.g., call drop rates, latency), and verifying compliance with MACRA’s Quality of Service (QoS) regulations. You’ll also liaise with operators, prepare findings for the Technical Division, and support public complaint investigations—often requiring travel to urban and peri-urban sites across Malawi.
How does the work culture and professional expectations differ for this role in Malawi compared to other countries?
Work culture at MACRA emphasizes respect for hierarchy, consensus-building in technical decisions, and responsiveness to national policy priorities like universal access. Punctuality and formal communication (especially in written reports and inter-agency meetings) are expected, and fluency in both English and Chichewa is often an advantage when engaging with local communities or field teams.
What career progression opportunities exist for a Quality Assurance Officer within MACRA or the broader Malawian telecom sector?
Internal progression may lead to Senior QA Officer, Team Leader for QoS Monitoring, or roles in Spectrum Management or Consumer Affairs. Outside MACRA, experience is transferable to telecom operators (e.g., Airtel Malawi, TNM), regional bodies like the EAC or SADC telecom units, or international development partners supporting digital infrastructure projects in Malawi.
What benefits—such as leave, medical aid, and pension—can I realistically expect in this role?
MACRA staff are covered under the National Pension Scheme (NPS) and entitled to statutory annual leave (21 days), sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per Malawian labour law. Medical aid is typically provided through a government-approved scheme, and allowances (e.g., transport or duty travel) may apply depending on operational requirements and budget availability.
How do I apply, and what do MACRA recruiters specifically look for in candidates for this role?
Applications are submitted via MACRA’s official website or advertised through the Public Appointments Committee and national newspapers like The Nation or Nyasa Times. Recruiters prioritise demonstrable experience in telecom QoS testing, familiarity with Malawian ICT regulations (e.g., MACRA Act and QoS Regulations), and evidence of analytical reporting—CVs with generic IT QA experience without telecom context are less competitive.
