Several years of progressive experience in procurement, preferably within the public sector or health-related projects, is typically expected.
What are the common day-to-day responsibilities of a Senior Project Procurement Specialist in Malawi's public health sector?
Daily tasks include preparing and managing tender documents, evaluating bids, negotiating contracts with suppliers, and ensuring compliance with Malawi's Public Procurement Act. You will also monitor supplier performance, maintain procurement records, and coordinate with project teams to align procurement activities with health program timelines. Regular reporting to senior management and adherence to donor-funded project requirements are also key responsibilities.
How does the local work culture and expectations differ in Malawian government ministries compared to private sector procurement roles?
Government roles emphasize strict adherence to bureaucratic procedures, transparency, and public accountability under the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) regulations. Decision-making processes tend to be slower due to multiple approval layers and committee-based evaluations. Punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and maintaining detailed documentation are highly valued in the Malawian civil service culture.

With strong performance, you may advance to Principal Procurement Specialist, Chief Procurement Officer, or Director of Procurement within the Ministry.
