Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a Senior Technical Manager for a health programme like ACHIEVE in Malawi?
Employers typically look for a Master's degree in public health, nursing, medicine, social sciences, or a related field, plus at least 7–10 years of experience in HIV/AIDS or health programming. Registration with relevant Malawian professional bodies (such as the Nurses and Midwives Council or Medical Council) is an advantage. Strong experience with USAID-funded projects is often preferred.
What are the day-to-day responsibilities of this district oversight role?
The role involves providing technical oversight of HIV service delivery across districts, supporting district health offices, supervising implementing partners, and monitoring programme performance against targets. You would also mentor facility-level staff, analyse data from DHIS2, and represent the project in District Executive Committee and other coordination meetings. Regular travel to districts and facilities is expected.
How much travel should I expect in this position?
District oversight roles typically require substantial field travel, often 40–60% of your time visiting health facilities and district health offices. You should be prepared for travel to hard-to-reach areas, sometimes with basic accommodation. Employers usually provide transport allowances and per diems according to their policies.
What benefits can I expect when working for an NGO like Pact in Malawi?
International NGOs in Malawi commonly offer medical aid coverage, pension contributions, paid annual leave, and sometimes housing or transport allowances. Benefits vary by employer and contract type, so review the offer carefully. Some organisations also support professional development and training opportunities.
What career growth paths are available after this role?
Strong performers often progress to national technical advisor positions, Chief of Party roles, or senior programme management within NGOs. Experience on USAID-funded projects like ACHIEVE is highly valued across the donor-funded health sector in Malawi and the region. Building skills in grants management and government engagement also opens doors to Ministry of Health advisory roles.
How do I apply, and what do employers in Malawi look for?
Applications are usually submitted through the organisation's careers portal or via email with a CV and cover letter tailored to the role. Employers look for demonstrated technical expertise, experience working with the Government of Malawi structures, strong report-writing skills, and fluency in English. Highlight measurable achievements from previous programmes rather than just listing duties.
