Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required to work as a social worker with the Liwonde Anglican Church in Malawi?

A minimum of a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from a Malawian institution accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) is usually required. Registration with the Malawi Social Workers’ Association (MSWA) is strongly preferred, and experience in faith-based or community development settings is valued. Some roles may also require basic training in child protection, gender-based violence response, or HIV/AIDS counselling aligned with national guidelines.

What does a typical day look like for a social worker at Liwonde Anglican Church?

Daily tasks often include home visits to vulnerable families, facilitating support groups (e.g., for orphans, people living with HIV, or survivors of gender-based violence), and coordinating referrals with local health centres or DSW offices. You’ll also participate in church-led outreach programmes, maintain case records per MSWA standards, and collaborate with village health committees and traditional leaders—common practice in rural Malawi.

How does the local work culture in Malawi influence expectations for social workers in church-based roles?

Respect for hierarchy, elders, and religious leadership is central; social workers are expected to engage humbly with clergy, chiefs, and community structures. Punctuality, dress code aligned with church values, and sensitivity to cultural norms—such as gender roles and communication styles—are essential. Teamwork is prioritised over individual initiative, and decisions are often made collectively with pastoral and community input.

What career progression opportunities exist for social workers in church-based roles like this one in Malawi?

With experience and further study (e.g., postgraduate diploma or Master’s in Social Work or Public Health), you may advance to supervisory or programme coordination roles within the Anglican Diocese or partner NGOs. Some transition into training roles with MSWA or take on advocacy positions with national bodies like the Department of Social Welfare. Others pursue dual roles—e.g., combining church-based practice with part-time lecturing at NCHE-accredited colleges.

What benefits (leave, medical aid, pension) can I realistically expect in this type of role?

Most church-based social work roles offer statutory leave entitlements under Malawian labour law—including 21 days paid annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave. Medical coverage is often limited to basic referral support or partnerships with nearby health facilities, not comprehensive private insurance. Pension arrangements vary: some churches contribute to the National Pension Scheme (NAPSA), while others offer informal savings schemes or none at all—clarify this during hiring.
