Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to become a Temporary Office Assistant at ESCOM?

Most employers in Malawi require an MSCE (Malawi School Certificate of Education) as a minimum, though a diploma in business administration, secretarial studies, or office management from a recognized institution strengthens your application. Computer literacy, especially MS Word and Excel, is usually expected. Since the role is temporary, relevant prior office experience can weigh heavily in your favour.

What are the typical day-to-day duties of a Temporary Office Assistant?

You would generally handle filing and records management, typing and preparing documents, receiving visitors and calls, photocopying, and supporting administrative staff with routine tasks. In a utility company like ESCOM, you may also assist with distributing correspondence between departments. Duties are often assigned flexibly depending on departmental needs during your temporary period.

How do I apply for this position, and what do Malawian employers look for?

Applications are typically submitted through ESCOM's official channels or advertised newspapers such as The Daily Times or The Nation, with a cover letter, CV, and certified copies of certificates. Employers look for clear communication skills, honesty, attention to detail, and willingness to learn. Always follow the exact application instructions stated in the advert, as incomplete applications are often rejected.

What benefits should I expect as a temporary employee in Malawi?

Temporary staff usually receive a monthly wage without the full benefits package offered to permanent employees, so pension contributions and medical aid schemes may not apply. You may still be entitled to basic leave days and statutory protections under Malawi's Employment Act. It is wise to clarify the terms of engagement, including contract duration, before accepting the offer.

Can a temporary Office Assistant role lead to permanent employment or career growth?

Yes, temporary roles are often used by employers like ESCOM to assess candidates for future vacancies, so performing well can open doors to permanent administrative positions. With experience, you could progress to roles such as Senior Office Assistant, Administrative Officer, or Executive Secretary. Pursuing further studies, such as a diploma or degree in administration, improves your long-term prospects.

What is the work culture like in Malawian offices, and what is expected of me?

Malawian workplaces generally value respect for hierarchy, punctuality, politeness, and formal dress code, so addressing seniors appropriately and arriving on time matters greatly. Teamwork and a helpful attitude toward colleagues are highly regarded. As a temporary staff member, showing reliability and initiative increases your chances of being remembered for future opportunities.
