Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a tyre fitter in Malawi?

Most employers require a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent, though some accept Junior Certificate with relevant experience. A certificate from a recognized vocational institution like Malawi Polytechnic or Don Bosco Technical College in automotive mechanics is highly advantageous. On-the-job training is common, and some employers may sponsor additional certifications in tyre technology or wheel alignment.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a tyre fitter?

Daily tasks include inspecting tyres for wear and damage, removing and fitting tyres on vehicles, performing wheel balancing and alignment, repairing punctures, and maintaining tyre pressure systems. You will also advise customers on appropriate tyre choices and maintain workshop equipment. Record-keeping of stock and completed jobs is typically expected in formal employment settings.

What is the work culture like for tyre fitters in Malawi?

The work is physically demanding and often involves long hours standing, bending, and lifting heavy tyres in varying weather conditions. Punctuality and reliability are highly valued, especially in urban centers like Lilongwe and Blantyre where competition for skilled workers exists. Respect for hierarchy and clear communication with supervisors and customers are important aspects of Malawian workplace culture.

What career progression opportunities exist for tyre fitters in Malawi?

With experience, you can advance to senior tyre fitter, workshop supervisor, or service manager positions within automotive dealerships and tyre companies. Some professionals transition into mobile tyre services or establish independent tyre fitting businesses, particularly in growing urban areas. Further training in advanced diagnostics or automotive mechanics can open doors to broader technician roles.

What benefits should I expect as a full-time tyre fitter in Malawi?

Benefits vary significantly by employer type, with larger companies and international tyre brands typically offering annual leave, sick leave, and some form of medical assistance or insurance. Pension contributions through the National Pension Scheme are legally required for formal employment. Smaller independent workshops may offer fewer formal benefits but sometimes provide meals, transport allowances, or overtime pay.

How do I apply for tyre fitter positions and what do Malawian employers look for?

Apply directly to automotive dealerships, tyre retail chains, transport companies, and mining firms with vehicle fleets, submitting your CV and copies of certificates to HR departments or workshop managers. Employers prioritize practical experience, honesty, and a strong work ethic over formal qualifications alone. Demonstrating mechanical aptitude during practical assessments and having reliable references from previous supervisors significantly improves your chances.
