Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or education do I need to become a Vehicle Sales Consultant in Malawi?

Most employers require a minimum of a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent, though a diploma or degree in business, marketing, or automotive studies is advantageous. Previous sales experience, even in retail or FMCG, is often valued more than formal automotive training. Strong communication skills in English and Chichewa are essential for building trust with local customers.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Vehicle Sales Consultant?

You will greet and qualify walk-in customers at the dealership, conduct vehicle demonstrations and test drives, and negotiate sales terms including financing options. Daily tasks include following up on leads via phone or WhatsApp, maintaining customer records, and coordinating with the service team for vehicle handovers. Meeting monthly sales targets is a core expectation in most Malawian dealerships.

How does the work culture and employer expectations differ in Malawian automotive sales?

Employers expect punctuality, professional appearance, and respect for hierarchy, with senior consultants often mentoring junior staff. Saturday work is common in retail automotive sales, though some dealerships rotate shifts. Building long-term relationships matters greatly, as word-of-mouth referrals drive repeat business in Malawi's close-knit communities.

What career progression opportunities exist for Vehicle Sales Consultants in Malawi?

Strong performers typically advance to Senior Sales Consultant, Sales Supervisor, or Branch Manager roles within three to five years. Some transition into fleet sales, aftersales management, or regional positions covering multiple dealerships. Developing expertise in commercial vehicle or agricultural equipment sales can open specialized, higher-responsibility paths.

What benefits should I expect from a full-time sales role with a company like CFAO Mobility Malawi?

Standard benefits usually include annual leave as mandated by Malawi labour law, typically fifteen to twenty days per year. Larger employers often provide medical aid or hospital insurance, though coverage levels vary significantly. Pension contributions through NICO or other registered schemes are increasingly common, and sales roles usually include commission or performance bonuses on top of base pay.

How should I apply for a Vehicle Sales Consultant position, and what do Malawian employers prioritize in candidates?

Submit a concise CV and cover letter through the company's careers portal, email, or in-person at the dealership, following instructions in the job advertisement exactly. Employers prioritize proven sales track records, reliability, and a clean driving license for demonstration purposes. Prepare for practical assessments such as mock customer interactions and basic numeracy tests during the interview process.
