What are the common day-to-day responsibilities of this role in Malawi?
You will design and implement vulnerability assessments, coordinate with government ministries and local partners to collect household data, and produce maps showing food insecurity hotspots across districts like Nsanje or Chikwawa. Regular tasks include training field enumerators, cleaning survey datasets, and presenting findings to stakeholders in Lilongwe or regional offices. During lean seasons, emergency deployment to affected areas for rapid needs assessments is common.

Hierarchical respect for senior staff and government counterparts is important; building relationships through face-to-face meetings often precedes formal agreements. Punctuality is valued in international organizations, though flexibility is needed when coordinating with rural communities during planting or harvest seasons. What realistic career progression paths exist for this role in Malawi?
With experience, you can advance to Senior Vulnerability Analysis Officer, then Head of Monitoring & Evaluation for WFP country operations or similar UN agencies. Some professionals transition to Food Security Advisor roles with the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee or join NGOs like CARE or World Vision at director level.
