The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) was established by Section 7 (1) of the Environment Management Act (EMA) of 2017 as the principal agency for the protection and management of the environment and sustainable utilization of natural resources. MEPA coordinates, monitors, supervises and consults with all relevant stakeholders on all activities relating to the utilization and management of the environment and natural resources.

MEPA is inviting applications from suitable, highly qualified, experienced and motivated candidates to fill the following vacancies tenable at its Secretariat at MEPA House, Nkhalango Street, City Centre, Lilongwe:

FINANCE DIVISION

Job Title. : Senior Accountant
Grade : ME4
Reporting to : Finance Manager
Responsible for. : Accountant
Purpose of the Job: To manage financial and accounting services for effective and efficient utilization of financial resources in the Authority

Job Summary

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the preparation of annual financial budget for the Authority in liaison with heads of divisions;
  • Preparing periodic financial reports for submission to management;
  • Monitoring and controlling expenditure to ensure adherence to budget and procedures;
  • Ensuring proper approvals for all payments;
  • Facilitating and monitoring bank transfers and payments;
  • Leading in the preparation and implementation of audits and facilitate responses to audit queries;
  • Managing the finance section and resources allocated to it; and
  • Advising management on prudent utilisation of resources and government financial regulations.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Accounting /Finance from an accredited institution recognized by National Council of Higher Education (NCHE), with at least three (4) years’ experience in a similar position.
  • A member of ICAM
  • A professional qualification such as: ACCA, CIMA, and ACA would be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Good knowledge of financial management
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel and Access).
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of accounting packages such as Accpac, SAGE etc.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a team with leadership skills for coaching and developing employees.
  • Mature and good communicator with adequate negotiating skills
