A teaching certificate from the Malawi Teaching Council is also required. Some schools may prefer candidates with coaching certifications in specific sports.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a PE teacher in Malawi?

You will plan and deliver practical sports lessons, organize school sports competitions, and maintain sports equipment. Duties often include supervising students during breaks and coordinating inter-school tournaments. You may also be expected to teach other subjects depending on staffing needs.

How does the work culture for teachers differ between government and private schools in Malawi?

Government schools follow Ministry of Education guidelines with structured hours but often face resource constraints for sports equipment. Private schools typically demand longer hours and higher performance standards but provide better facilities. Both require strong community engagement with parents and local education officials.

You can advance to Head of Department, Sports Master/Mistress, or Deputy Headteacher positions with experience and further qualifications. Some transition into sports administration with the Ministry of Education or National Council of Sports. Others pursue advanced degrees to become lecturers at teacher training colleges.

What benefits should I expect as a PE teacher in Malawi?

Government positions typically include pension through the Public Service Pension Fund, annual leave, and limited medical coverage. Private sector benefits vary by employer and may include better medical aid or housing allowances. Always confirm specific benefits during your interview as packages differ significantly.

What do employers in Malawi look for when hiring PE teachers?

Employers prioritize demonstrated coaching experience, first aid certification, and ability to teach multiple sports practically. Strong references from teaching practice or previous schools are essential.
